Aerosol Photometers have continued to grow in application and utility, particularly in the last decade. With their increasing application to ambient environmental monitoring and Homeland Defense applications, minimal maintenance has become of paramount importance. The obvious principle of blowing air over the lenses does not work. Sufficient air to keep the lens truly clean amounts to an air flow rate equal to the main flow through the instrument. This in turn leads to erroneous readings which will vary with concentration and aerosol properties.

By structuring and containing the flow of the sample through the light beam and ensuring that it is within the laminar flow regime we are able to cause the stream of aerosol laden gas to “jump” the light beam gap. Hence there is no dispersion of the aerosol particles and no lens deposition. This arrangement is simply illustrated in the accompanying drawing:

This BGI Patented device has been designed to fit the Casella Microdust Pro Photometer. When used with any non pulsating flow rate, less than 16 lpm all aerosol particles will “jump the gap” and lenses will remain clean.
