The GK 4.162 designed by BGI is the highest flow rate personal cyclone for respirable sampling. The sampler was developed under a contract supported by the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) and tested at the Health and Safety Laboratory (UK).
The design is a natural extension of the GK 2.69 Cyclone which was developed as a dual use cyclone for use in sampling Respirable and Thoracic dust fractions. It has become popular as a high flow rate Respirable sampler for Silica. At 4.2 lpm there were many investigators who nonetheless felt that this was not sufficient and something in the order of 8-10 lpm was necessary. A copy of the HSE Laboratory report is attached.
Regarding the correct flow rate, quoting directly from the report by Andrew Thorpe:
The GK4.162 cyclone sampler was found to conform to the respirable sampling convention defined in EN481 (1993) at flow rates between 8.5 & 9.5 l min-1. Between these flow rates, the measured D50 was between 2 - 8% of the target value of 4 μm and the sampler met the bias performance criteria (BPC) which states that _ 85% of all the calculated sampler biases should be within +/- 10% for size distributions with mass median aerodynamic diameters (MMAD)
between 1& 30 and geometric standard deviations (GSD) between 1.75 & 4.
Because of the high flow rates the BGI 400 Omni Personal sampler is recommended for this application.
