What is in a Name.
BGI, like all manufacturers, must find names for their products. The phrases that come to mind in discovering a product name are: Catchy, evocative, memorable, exciting and of course a perfect blend of the above. Over the years we have used:
- VRC-Variable resistance calibrator. Workmanlike.
- deltaCal – measures four things. No mistake here.
- PQ 100. A powerful (P) high flow (Q) pump. Not very good, but turned out memorable.
- Omni – Wonderful name for a sampler. Evocative of an all rounder.
- Triplex Cyclone Three cut points. Certainly memorable.
All of the above were good names, but not exciting. Now we have a new product which is exciting and we wanted an exciting name. We have long been fascinated with the History of atmospheric science.
We were particularly taken with the historic voyage of the H.M.S. Challenger.
It is generally well known that the seminal oceanic studies performed on the great voyage of 1872-76 profoundly changed and firmly established the science of Oceanography. What is less well known is that there was an atmospheric component to the research. (note: this is a large file and may take a few minutes to download)
Because of our 35 year corporate involvement with atmospheric studies we have taken the liberty of naming our newest instrument The Challenger® in honor of this great Scientific Study. This is the fifth in a series of Calibrators spanning 31 years of our 35 year history.
