The WINS impactor is an EPA design standard specified in the current FRM for PM2.5 sampling1. The design has been laboratory tested for its intended purpose2,3 and field tested4.

The referenced testing has proven its utility as a second stage PM2.5"cut" device for both single channel and four day sequential sampling.
For sampling strategies requiring intervals longer than four days, without cleaning the Sharp Cut Cyclone offers the only viable alternative. Real time PM2.5 monitors will require two to four week intervals between cleaning. Speciation samplers operating at 16.67 lpm will be able to utilize this dry technology.

Because of this perceived need for a non impactive - but WINS equivalent - device, the SCC was developed by BGI and tested by Dr. Lee Kenny5,6
of the Health and Safety Laboratory, Sheffield, UK. The SCC design was based upon previous, peer reviewed works. Both the WINS and the SCC were rigorously laboratory and field tested. For short sampling periods there is no perceptible difference between the WINS and the SCC. Over longer (than EPA Required) periods, the SCC proved to be the more precise instrument.

A scientific paper on this project is in press. For an abridged version of the test results, click on reference No. 4 below.

The SCC is an exact "plug in" replacement for the WINS. Any sampling instrument using the EPA standard WINS may substitute the SCC.
